DREADS INFO

Info over Dreads

Dreadlocks; a hairstyle worn with pride and respect. For everyone it has its own meaning and journey.

When we talk about dreadlocks, which are also called dreads or locs, there is a lot of discussion about their history. The origin of dreadlocks is connected to the Rastafari movement in Jamaica. It has its origins in Ethiopia, the race Tafari Makonnen, the name of the Ethiopian emperor Haile Selassie. For the Rastafari, wearing locs is not just a hairstyle, but a deep-rooted belief, a powerful statement and a lifestyle that is proudly displayed.

Dreadlocks are the result of a sincere love for your hair, a unique expression and dedication to this hairstyle.

Some call them dreads, others call them locs; we use both terms. We make no distinction, because there is nothing 'dreadful' about dreads.

What we want to emphasize, besides the history and origin, is that this hairstyle is accessible to everyone today. That the love for dreads comes from the heart. For some it is a cultural belief, for others a fashion statement and for others a temporary curiosity in appearance change. Whatever your personal reason for wearing locs, we are ready to support you in this!

Maybe you have wanted to have dreads for years, but you were afraid of the opinions of others, afraid that you would not get that one job if you had them. Take the step when you are ready and wear them with pride. Because that is the feeling that dreads give you, pride! We are happy to help you realize your dream. Whether it concerns 1 dread, beach locs or a whole head full! Everything is possible. We do this with a lot of passion and love. The Irie Dreads team consists of ladies who all have locs themselves, years of experience as loctitians and are experienced experts in the field of hair/dreadlocks and can give you the best advice when it comes to locs and their care. You are in good hands with us!

At Irie Dreads we think it is important that you can take some time for yourself in peace. That is why we only have 1 chair per room, 1-on-1 contact with the customer, all the time to have your hair done, to enjoy your latte macchiato, your cappuccino or your cup of tea. No busy waiting rooms, multiple chairs, no... We only work by appointment. We stand for quality, that moment when your dreads are being worked on with passion and you don't have to do anything at all. The dose of love and care for your locs. At Irie Dreads we choose to bring back the warm living room feeling., a nice cup of coffee, a chat, space to ask questions and to choose jewelry and care products/necessities for your locs. We are also a small 'concept store' for local entrepreneurs who offer Handmade & Fairtrade products and we have a rack with beautiful vintage fashion in the salon.

The Methods

We work purely naturally, without chemicals, only with a crochet hook. There are different methods: Crochet - Method (crochet): Crocheting with a crochet hook to get your dreads round and to secure all loose roots. Interlocking: of your dreads with a crochet hook (pull your own dread through your roots). Crocheting and interlocking: for a tighter result and easy maintenance, you can wash your hair more often and swim or do intensive sports without it coming loose. Twisting and crochet method: new dreads are made by us by means of twisting, backcombing and with a crochet needle. Palm rolling method: this method only works for hair type 4a, b and c. And can be used for updating locs but also for making locs You choose the method that you would like to have applied to your hair. We can advise you well in this and you can choose which method works best for you. When making a new set of locs, we start with clean and combed hair, here we make the partings and divisions to determine how thick/thin the locs will be and how they will fall... 1 way, slanted partings, side thicker or thinner,. Everything is negotiable, indicate yourself what you want and realize what is feasible. see our FAQ for all other info

Having locs installed and/or updated can be very painful.

It depends on how sensitive you are and how often your hair has been touched as to what you will experience as painful.

Crocheting feels like pulling one hair at a time. It can be painful or irritating. The team at Irie Dreads tries to take everyone's pain threshold into account and work very gently and precisely on your head, as much as possible.

We do everything we can to make your experience as painless as possible, but the fact remains that hair removal can be painful.

If you have never had your hair combed out at the hairdresser's, or have never had it braided, or are not used to anything, then keep in mind that it will hurt.

For parents of children (aged 5 to 18) who would like to have locs, we advise you to think very carefully about this choice, indicate that it hurts... not only when making the locs but also every 10 weeks when you have them touched up.

Is your child whiny and/or are you in doubt? Then wait until he/she is 18 and can make this decision for himself/herself.
